Cyber security is a complex issue that involves a series of different technologies, policies and procedures that are needed to secure the network from outside malicious activity.
In its simplest form, cyber security involves a combination of hardware, software and networking protocols in place in order to protect a computer system from harm.
The threat is real and growing exponentially. Last year alone, more than 3 billion records were stolen or exposed in data breaches worldwide. A study by Verizon found that the number of breaches per month has been steadily increasing over the past four years. In 2015, there was an average of 6.4 incidents per month; in 2016, there was an average of 7.2 incidents per month; and in 2017, there was an average of 8.8 incidents per month.
The cost of cybercrime what is cyber security all about staggering: According to a report by McAfee and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), cybercrime costs the world economy $500 billion a year. That figure does not include losses from companies’ own investments in cybersecurity measures or the cost to individuals whose data is stolen or who have their identities compromised because of a data breach.
